The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ,
the Son of God;
John

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him
was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light
of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the

The same came for a witness, to bear witness

There was in the days of Herod, the king of
Judaea, a certain priest named Zachari as, of the course of Abia: and his wife [was] of
the daughters of Aaron, and her name [was] Elisabeth.

And they were both righteous before God,
walking in all the commandments and ordin ances of the Lord blameless.
7
And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were [now] well stricken in
years.
8
And it came to pass, that while he executed
the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 According to the custom of the priest's office,
his lot was to burn incense when he went into
the temple of the Lord.
10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying
without at the time of incense.
11
And there appeared unto him an angel of the
Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12
And when Zacharias saw [him], he was
troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias:
for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth
shall
bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14
And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and
many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord,
and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink;
and
he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16
And many of the children of Israel shall he
turn to the Lord their God.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power
of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers
to
the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people
prepared
for
the Lord.

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby
shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am
Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God;and
am
sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these glad tidings.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not ablet
speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my
words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled
that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto
them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto
them, and remained speechless.

And it came to pass, that, as soon as the
days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived,
and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days
wherein he looked on [me], to take away my reproach among men.

And fear came on all that dwelt round about
them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout

And all they that heard [them] laid [them] up
in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was

And his father Zacharias was filled with the
Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he
hath visited and redeemed his people,

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for
us in the house of his servant David;

That we should be saved from our enemies, and

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this
wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was
found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man],
and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.

But while he thought on these things, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David,
fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the
Holy Ghost.

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou
shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Now all this was done, that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet,saying,

Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and

multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise
men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
8 ye have found [him], bring me word again, that I
may come and worship him also.
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and,
lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with
exceeding great joy.
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they

And it came to pass, that after three days
they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and
asking them questions.

And all that heard him were astonished at his
understanding and answers.

9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have
Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto
you, that God
is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

And now also the ax is laid unto the root of

I indeed baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to
bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire:

chaff with unquenchable fire.

Every valley shall be filled, and every
mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the
rough ways [shall be] made smooth;
6
And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7
Then said he to the multitude that came forth
to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath
to come?
8
Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of
repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I
say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
9
And now also the ax is laid unto the root of
the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast
into the fire.
10
And the people asked him, saying, What shall
we do then?
11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two
coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat,let him do likewise.
12
Then came also publicans to be baptized, and
said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13
And he said unto them, Exact no more than
that which is appointed you.
14
And the soldiers likewise demanded of him,
saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them,
Do
violence to no man, neither accuse [any] falsely; and be content with your wages.
15
And as the people were in expectation, and
all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
16
John answered, saying unto [them] all, I
indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet ofwhose shoes I
am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17
Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will
thoroughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but thechaff he
will burn with fire unquenchable.
18
And many other things in his exhortation
preached he unto the people.
2. The Baptism of Jesus

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto
John, to be baptized of him.
14
But John forbad him, saying, I have need to
be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15
And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer [it
to be so] now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

4. The Temptation of Jesus
1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the
wilderness to be tempted of the devil
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
he was afterward an hungered.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou
be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall
not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city,
and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God,
cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and
in [their] hands they shall bear thee up,lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a
stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou
shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding
high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give
thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence,
Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou
serve.

Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold,
angels came and ministered unto him.

6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I
give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered
unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be
thine.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get
thee behind me, Satan: for it is written , Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him
only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a
pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God cast thyself down
from hence:
